Our History
The Beacon Arts was founded in January 1985 to provide children with the opportunity to develop their innate skills in the creative arts with encouragement and performance. Early artistic training is beneficial to future development, inspiring those who participate with confidence and awareness. Although specialising in activities for children, the Beacon Arts also offers ballet classes for adults.
Karen Smith has been the Director of the Beacon Arts since 1992. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music, London before emigrating to Australia, where she worked with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as 2nd bassoonist and then as their Assistant Manager. Returning to the UK in 1991, the retirement of Mary Farmer as Beacon Arts’ Director gave Karen the opportunity of remaining in arts management. Karen continues to pursue her musical interest by playing bassoon with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra (another SSO!) and in shows and operas for local societies.
